Cheung Tops Ballot to Boast Record-Breaking Gains from 2009
Cambridge, Massachusetts – City Councillor Leland Cheung won re-election to a second term and made history as the only incumbent to finish first after a close ninth place victory in 2009, according to the final election results released Friday. Cheung topped the ballet with 2,017 number one votes, almost triple his 2009 results, and secured his seat with over 400 extra votes.
“Serving as City Councillor has been my passion and privilege, and I am incredibly humbled that my vision and message to believe in a better Cambridge resonated positively with community members,” Cheung said. “I have been committed since day one to ensuring that the people of Cambridge have a strong voice and are represented on the City Council and I look forward to continuing my work to build a stronger city for generations to come.”
The Cheung campaign ran an aggressive Get Out the Vote (GOTV) operation to build momentum in the weeks leading up to Election Day. Volunteers went door-to-door talking with community members about Cheung’s commitment to creating jobs, maintaining Cambridge’s community feel and efforts to make municipal government more accountable. Throughout the campaign, hard working volunteers reached out to family members, friends and neighbors about the work Cheung has done, and will continue to do for Cambridge.
“As the first Asian American elected to the City Council, and now the first incumbent to top the ballot after narrowly winning a seat in 2009, Leland Cheung continues to break records with each step he takes,” Cheung’s campaign manager Anthony Morse said. “The Cheung campaign ran strong and brought new energy and vigor to municipal elections. Cheung is a rising star who has positioned himself as an influential figure in local politics as well as statewide politics through his involvement in the Democratic State Party. He has the remarkable ability to shape policy based on his ideals and convictions, is easily accessible to constituents, and in tune with the needs of the entire city.”
