It started as a simple request last week to get politicians from both sides of the Charles — Cambridge and Boston — to talk about economic development. And even though it was eventually approved, the discussion that surrounded the proposed meeting spiraled into a mystifying melange of parochialism and talk about spilling Cambridge’s “secret sauce.”
Some city councilors said the meeting proposed by City Councilor Leland Cheung might reveal too much information to Boston, as if Cheung was due to leak documents a la Wikileaks. But Cheung’s idea is not a bad one at all. Regional cooperation is something we should work more on; in fact, the positives might even outweigh the negatives. And here’s the kicker: there are companies and people outside Boston who think of Cambridge as being part of Boston. But not to fear: Cambridge has its natural advantages, most notably proximity to world-class universities such as Harvard and MIT and an already robust biotech and pharmaceutical core.
The Council eventually supported the idea and members of the Cambridge and Boston city councils will meet at the Museum of Science on Thursday, Dec. 16 at 3 p.m.
According to a release by Cheung and Boston City Councilor Michael Ross (see: Cooperation!) the group will get an overview of the region’s economic competitiveness. The idea is that it is more important to worry about attracting companies to the banks of the Charles River than it is to worry about which side of that river they end up on.
In the end, talk never hurt anyone and, as Cheung told the Council, city councilors won’t be sharing any “secret sauce” with their counterparts.
