Leland Cheung won re-election to a second term and made history as the only incumbent to finish first after finishing in ninth place the past election. According to the final election results, Leland topped the ballet with 2,017 number one votes, almost triple his 2009 results, and more than 400 over the next closest candidate. This was also an historic number of votes as Leland received more number one votes than any candidate for Cambridge City Council has in the past 8 years. A Letter from Leland

on .

The values that direct my work as your City Councillor are inclusive government, community, and the creation and safeguarding of opportunity. When my father immigrated to Cambridge from China to pursue his American dream, what he found here was so special that he became determined to instill in me an appreciation for those values. With occasional trips to visit relatives in China, he made me realize how amazing Democracy is, giving us both freedom and the responsibility to participate in shaping our government. After moving the family in search of work, he encouraged me to volunteer at the local Y so I could learn to draw strength from the community by first contributing to it. By coming to this country with nothing and accessing opportunities to succeed, he demonstrated the power of a society that governs for the future, catches people when they fall, and helps people create a better life for their kids.

Cambridge is a community that exemplifies my belief that government can be a force for good. That is why I chose to settle down, buy a house, and get married here. By working together we can solve problems today and lay plans for a better future. That’s why I need your #1 vote.

As your City Councillor I've focused on bringing leadership, accessibility, and a fresh perspective to moving Cambridge forward and improving the lives of residents. In my 1st term I:

* Introduced a ‘Good Government’ rules change requiring the City Council to post any City Manager’s contract before voting on it.

* Voted for affordable housing, public gardens, and open space; fought for sensible development that keeps our community feel.

* Worked with the Police to develop BridgeStat, a monthly report using data analysis to stop crime and keep residents informed.

* Stood with working-class residents in fighting for fair pay, healthcare, and local jobs from developers and universities.

* Held the first-ever joint hearing of the Cambridge & Boston City Councils to develop strategies to create jobs & attract employers.

* Partnered with CLF on the 1st Local Economy Week to keep local businesses operating and tax dollars in local, not foreign, banks.

* Fought for common sense measures to protect the environment: funding for hybrid taxis, bike sharing, & single stream recycling.

Vote Leland Cheung #1 for a City Councillor that answers all his email, lists his cell phone, and works to bring your ideas to life!

Ward 6 City Council Candidates Forum

Wednesday, August  31, 2011 7:00-9:30 p.m.

Brief introductory statements:

I was first elected two years ago and it took everyone by surprise, including me. I changed my schedule as a Harvard and MIT student pursuing a dual MPA/MBA degree to part-time status so I could devote my full energy to the Council. I've made the most of the opportunity by helping as many people and implementing as much policy as I can.  I think those who have worked with me will say I'm responsive, thoughtful, always ready to listen, and eager to help.

North Cambridge for Leland

on .

Dear Friend,

Please come to our house for an end-of-summer North Cambridge neighborhood party to get to know City Councilor Leland Cheung: 20 Gold Star Road, 4-6 PM on Saturday, September 10th.

As most of you know, we have been very active in Main Street North Cambridge to promote the livability and walkability of North Mass Ave. As part of that effort, we put forward an ambitious zoning change to preserve retail along our section of the Avenue. Leland took instrumental and forceful action for this initiative that we believe will be effective in preserving the retail and walkability of our neighborhood.

Leland has worked hard for North Cambridge; he's progressive and he's effective; we thought you'd like to meet him. Even more than that, come to hang out with us and your neighbors and enjoy some food, refreshments, and maybe a little music. You'll have a good time.

Please RSVP by sending us an email back.

Hope to see you there,

Michael & Macky

Entrepreneur Walk of Fame

on .

The Entrepreneur Walk of Fame will unveil its inaugural class of seven esteemed honorees whose names will be immortalized with a sidewalk star in Kendall Square on Friday, September 16 at 1:00 p.m. Similar to Hollywood’s celebration of movie stars, the Entrepreneur Walk of Fame awards entrepreneurs at the top of their fields who have taken strong steps to transform the business culture, jumpstart a sector of the economy, and most importantly, create jobs. Posters depicting the inspirational stories of the honorees will be displayed around the square with QR codes that allow smartphone users to tap into a virtual world of information to enrich the learning experience. I am proud to lead this initiative to honor individuals who have created new jobs and enhanced the innovation economy. It is my hope that over the long term the Entrepreneur Walk of Fame will inspire our kids to consider entrepreneurship as a career and in so doing create jobs in Cambridge. With our celebrity-obsessed media driven culture I think it's important to show kids a path to stardom based on hardwork and innovative thinking.
